Turkey welcomed Palestine’s winning upgraded UN status.
A statement from the ministry said that 138 countries voted in favor of the Palestine’s bid, nine voted against and 41 countries abstained in the historic voting. It was said that the voting was a big step for Palestine to be an independent and sovereign state and the number of votes in favor of Palestine’s bid was a message to the UN Security Council members and the international community.
Statement said that although Palestine administration had been undertaking constructive steps for peace, Israel was making it impossible by its policies. Turkey called on the UN and the international community to extend their efforts on re-starting the peace negotiations.
Turkey was presented at the voting at the highest level by FM Ahmet Davutoglu.
Delivering a speech before the voting, Davutoglu underlined that giving Palestine the right to be a state was a political, strategic and legal obligation for the international community.
Saying that being a “non-member observer state” at the UN was only a beginning, Davutoglu added that based on the two state solution, until the Palestine flag will wave in the East Jerusalem, the injustice towards Palestinians would not be considered ended.
He said Turkey would never leave Palestinian brethren alone and called on the international community to make every effort for a just and sustainable peace.
