Turkey’s Prime Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu has said that Russia is attempting an “ethnic cleansing” with its airstrikes in Northern Syria. He stated that Russia has targeted Turkmen and Sunni communities around the Latakia area.
Relations between Ankara and Moscow have soured since Turkey shot down a Russian warplane on the Syrian border. Turkey insists that it shot down the Russian plane on the 24th. of November because the bomber had trespassed into its airspace whereas Russia denies it.
Russia has announced wide-ranging sanctions against Turkey including a ban on importing Turkish fruit, vegetables and some other food. Russians can no longer go on package holidays in Turkey, which, until this month, was the top foreign destination for Russian tourists.
