Russia is not protecting the government in Syria and is not its advocate, Russian President Vladimir Putin said today during a joint press conference with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
“We are not protecting the regime, and we are not advocates for [the Syrian regime],” Putin said. “What worries us is the future of Syria. We do not want recent mistakes to be repeated.”
Putin referred to international backing given to the Libyan opposition, and the death of the U.S. ambassador in a militant attack on Washington’s mission in Benghazi on Sept. 11.
“We will continue working with Turkey, and with the world,” Putin said.
Putin then told reporters that Turkey and Russia shared “similar positions” on the Syrian crisis.
“Our positions [on Syria] are the same but we have different ideas on how the future of Syria will be constructed,” Putin said.
