Paris, France – The Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, designed to be a grand and inclusive celebration, has sparked significant controversy globally, with strong reactions in Turkey. The most contentious segment was a performance inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” featuring DJ Barbara Butch with drag artists and dancers. This portrayal was criticized as blasphemous and disrespectful by religious and conservative groups worldwide.
Religious leaders and commentators, including the French Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion in Egypt, condemned the scene. Russian officials also criticized the performance, viewing it as offensive to religious sentiments. In response, the Paris 2024 Olympics organizing committee issued an apology. Spokesperson Anne Descamps stated, “There was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. Our aim was to celebrate community tolerance. If anyone took offense, we are genuinely sorry.” Artistic director Thomas Jolly emphasized that the intent was to promote love and inclusion, not division.
Turkey’s Reaction
In Turkey, the reaction was particularly intense, focusing on the perceived promotion of LGBTQ+ values. Turkish media and political figures voiced strong disapproval, arguing that the ceremony contradicted traditional and religious norms. Social media was abuzz with criticism, calling for more mindful representation in international events.
Additionally, Turkey’s ceremonial attire drew criticism. The team wore blue outfits that many found inappropriate, comparing them to pajamas and suggesting they resembled Israeli uniforms. This added another layer to the already heated debate.
Despite the controversy, the ceremony was praised for its unique approach. Held outside a stadium for the first time in modern Olympic history, it featured performances by renowned artists such as Gojira, Aya Nakamura, Celine Dion, and Lady Gaga. However, technical issues, poor weather, and the ceremony’s length drew some criticism.
The mixed reception highlights the challenge of balancing artistic expression with cultural sensitivity on a global stage. The IOC and Paris 2024 organizers have acknowledged the feedback and aim to ensure future events respect diverse perspectives and values.
