Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna Bakyt Dzhusupov took part in a panel discussion marking the 10th anniversary of Peaceful Uses Initiative of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
According to the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry, this initiative was launched in 2010 as a quick and responsive way to allow member states to provide funds for extra-budgetary projects in the area of peaceful application of nuclear technology
In his speech, Bakyt Dzhusupov noted the IAEA Initiative has accelerated progress in implementing the Agency’s technical projects in the field of peaceful applications of nuclear technology, including in Kyrgyzstan. Thanks to the ongoing support from donor countries, the Agency is able to respond quickly to the needs of its member states.
As part of the Initiative, the IAEA supported Kyrgyzstan by implementing a project in the Central Asian region on strengthening of coordination in the rehabilitation of former uranium mining sites. One of the Initiative’s projects in Kyrgyzstan is also aimed at building the country’s capacity to fight cervical cancer.
During the virtual event, a presentation was made by the Agency for Tailings Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic on the implementation of reclamation projects in the republic.
