A French court on Tuesday sentenced a schoolboy to two years in jail for stabbing his teacher in the chest after she ordered him to stay behind after school as punishment.
The boy was 13 at the time of the May 2009 attack in a school in the suburbs of the southwestern city of Toulouse. The teacher was seriously injured but has since been able to return to her profession.
The verdict — which sentenced the boy to five years in jail with three to be suspended — came after a series of incidents across France since school resumed after the summer break in which teachers were assaulted by students.
Education Minister Vincent Peillon last month said he would set up a special committee to decide on how to deal with violence in the education system.
