Defending Turkish men’s volleyball champion Fenerbahçe beat Arkasspor in straight sets on Oct. 8 to claim the Super Cup.
Fenerbahçe needed 73 minutes to beat Arkasspor 25-17, 25-20, 25-22 in the game played at the TVF Başkent Sports Hall in Ankara.
Coach Daniel Jorge Castellani said his team rose to the challenge.
“We started slow in the first two sets,” he said to broadcaster NTV Spor. “In the third set they adapted to the game but then we played even better.”
Fenerbahçe passer Arslan Ekşi dedicated to the trophy to the club chairman Aziz Yıldırım, who is jailed pending trial as part of a football match fixing case.
“All my teammates performed perfect on a tough time like this,” Ekşi said. “We dedicate this trophy to our chairman and all our fans. We will claim all the trophies this season and will dedicate them to the boss.”
That was Fenerbahçe’s first Super Cup victory. Previously Istanbul BB and Ziraat Bankası had won the first two editions of the competition, respectively.
