Doing remixes for great acts such as Simply Red, Junior Jack, Kiko Navarro, Robbie Rivera and more, now he also owns his own record label, Urbana. He also shines with his live performances for the party series at Ibiza that are organized by one of the biggest dance labels, “Defected.”
Penn is to perform in İstanbul on Oct. 6 at the 360 İstanbul club. Ahead of his Saturday night set, Penn speaks about his career, his favorite singers and lists his favorite DJs:
One of the club classics “The Night Train” was your breakthrough hit. How did you come up with that unforgettable dance track?
To be honest, I don’t remember what inspired me, the idea of the track was done in a few hours, and I felt that this track was special. When everything is fixed fast, it is so emotional.
You are one of top Spanish DJs. Who are your favorite DJs?
My favorite Spanish DJs are Toni Bass, DJ Chus, Oscar De Rivera, Abel Ramos & Rober Gaez.
You first started music with classical piano lessons. Do you think it helps in the creative process as a DJ?
Of course, it helps a lot, but normally a simple idea works better than being a virtuoso. I think that is where I make the difference.
If you had a chance, which pop singer would you like to collaborate with?
Stevie Wonder, Madonna and Coldplay, to name a few!
Concha Buika is one of the most popular Spanish singers in Turkey now. You collaborated with her on the song “We Play House.” What’s the story of this track?
We wanted to meet Concha Buika because we loved her voice when she was working with Kiko Navarro and everything was so easy with her … She’s a great person. Chus and I were working with her in the studio and we did “We Play House” also “Will I (Discover Love)?,” which was released in the UK with a big success and we will release new mixes this year on my label Urbana.
You are going to perform in İstanbul on Oct. 6. What comes to your mind when you think of İstanbul?
I’ve played in İstanbul many times and it was great, the people have a lot of energy there!
