U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Tuesday that shifts in Syria reveal a significant distraction among the Assad regime’s key allies, Russia and Iran. This diversion, he noted, has enabled militants to gain momentum in the region.
“Recent attacks by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) demonstrate that Assad’s primary supporters—Russia, Hezbollah, and Iran—are preoccupied with their internal challenges. HTS seems to have exploited this opportunity,” Blinken remarked following a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting.

Blinken highlighted the urgency of avoiding further conflict in Syria. He emphasized safeguarding civilians and advancing a political resolution in line with a U.N. Security Council resolution. Reaffirming U.S. priorities, Blinken also reiterated the country’s commitment to preventing the resurgence of ISIS, describing it as a critical security concern.
Lebanon-Israel Cease-fire Remains Intact, Blinken Assures
Blinken addressed the cease-fire agreement between Lebanon and Israel, established on Nov. 27, and confirmed that it remains in effect.
Acknowledging claims of potential violations, Blinken stressed the necessity of resolving disputes through a monitoring mechanism set up with France. He underlined that both Israel and Lebanon share a vested interest in sustaining the cease-fire. The U.S., he added, remains dedicated to supporting this stability in the region.
Ukraine’s Efforts Vital for Resistance Against Russia
Turning his focus to Ukraine, Blinken emphasized the importance of continued mobilization to withstand Russian aggression. He assured that the U.S. would maintain its assistance, providing Ukrainian soldiers with training and advanced equipment.
Ensuring Ukraine’s readiness for possible peace talks is essential, Blinken argued. He stressed that positioning Ukraine from a point of strength is a critical aspect of any future negotiations.
