The fortunes of two of the US Democratic party’s favoured candidates have begun to diverg in ways that is defying the predictions of the Washington elite, with Bernie Sanders now leading Hillary Clinton in key primary races in both New Hampshire and Iowa.
The polls represent the changing fortunes of the race for the democratic nomination, Clinton having held a narrow lead over Sanders in New Hampshire as recently as November 2015.
In troubling news for Clinton, a Quinnipiac University poll have found that Sanders is viewed as more compassionate and trustworthy than Clinton, whilst also being stronger on the key Democrat issues of climate change and the economy. However, Sanders still lags behind Clinton on foreign policy and is considered to have a higher “electability” rating.
