US President Barack Obama delivered his final State of the Union today, declaring among other things, that his government would lead a new “moonshot” effort to be headed by Vice President Joe Biden to “cures cancer once and for all.”
Throughout the address President Obama also repeated his consistent criticisms of the poisonous partisan politics that had become the norm in the country, called on Congress to authorise military action against ISIS, and argued that whilst the American economy remained strong and growing, it needed to be fairer.
However, whilst The President argued for a greater commitment to the fight against ISIS, he cautioned that this should not lead to hostility to Muslims at home, chiding Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump for suggest that Muslim immigrants should be banned from entering the United States as betraying “who we are as a country.”
Mr Obama rounded out his speech by focussing on his government’s achievements, touting the Paris climate deal, the post GFC economic recovery, and the success of his Affordable Care Act.
