The number of migrants and refugees crossing into Europe by land and sea this year illegally has surpassed 1 million, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This number is a fourfold increase since last year.
Most migrants crossed by sea, with more than 800,000 travelling from Turkey to Greece. Half of these migrants are from Syria.
This massive influx of migrants has caused significant rifts in European politics. Some states inside the birder-free Schengen area are putting up fences and imposing controls at the frontiers. Germany alone has received a million refugees and migrants this year alone.
