An Israeli man who was critically wounded on Tuesday morning after being hit by gunfire from the neighboring Gaza Strip has succumbed to his injuries, Israeli Radio reported.
The man had been working on the border fence between the Gaza Strip and Israel in the area between Nahal Oz and Kfar Aza – two Israeli kibbutzim – when he was shot.
The worker had been repairing the fence, which was damaged by a recent storm that swept through the region, Yediot Ahronot newspaper reported on its website.
He had been taken to Soroka Medical Center in the southern city of Beersheba for treatment, but was pronounced dead moments later.
No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
The Israeli army responded to the incident by shelling the area in Gaza located opposite Nahal Oz, although no injuries have been reported, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.
The Israeli paper said the army had closed the road leading to the site where the man was shot, adding that the army was expected to soon respond to the shooting.
