Germany will push international players to have a joint position against the Syrian regime over its use of chemical gas against civilians, Prime Minister Angela Merkel said.
Merkel reiterated that Berlin will not take a role in punitive airstrikes against Damascus. “But we will press for a common approach against Syria,” Merkel expressed.
The German PM told parliament during her last speech before general elections that she will discuss the latest developments with Russia and other allies when G20 leaders convene at Saint Petersburg.
During the summit, world leaders will discuss economical developments around the globe, but Syria is expected to be a foremost subject. US President Barack Obama asked for authorization from the US Senate to take action against Syria regarding its use of chemical gas, which Washington had declared as a red line. Russia and China, Syria’s staunch supporters, object to such unilateral action without a mandate from the UN Security Council. German PM Merkel also said that 340 million Euros had been allocated for Syrian refugees.
