Justice and Development (AK) Party Ankara MP Cemil Cicek was elected parliament speaker for second time.
Cemil Cicek, an MP from the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, was reelected as parliament speaker, winning 299 votes in the third round.
In Tuesday’s election Cicek’s rivals were main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) MP Osman Koruturk and opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) MP Faruk Bal.
In the third round Cicek was reelected as the new parliament speaker, winning 299 out of 477 votes, while Korutürk received 109, and Bal got 47 votes.
Cicek, 26th speaker of Turkish parliament, has been on duty since July 4, 2011.
According to provisions of the Turkish constitution, election for the top parliament post is held every two years.
Two-thirds majority (367) of total number of deputies (550) is required to be elected in the first two rounds of the voting.
The candidate who gets 367 votes in these two votings is elected the new parliament speaker. If no candidate secures this majority, a third round of voting is held and in this third round to win absolute majority of deputies, equal to 276.
