Two attackers targeted a police station in Istanbul’s İstinye neighborhood last night, throwing a hand grenade and opening fire on the building.
One of the attackers was injured after the police officer on guard in front of the station reacted to the attack. The assailant later died in hospital, while the other fled.
The attack happened at around 11 p.m. when one of the attackers threw a hand grenade at the police station and then sprayed the building with automatic pistol fire, according to Istanbul Chief of Police Hüseyin Çapkın. “A shootout followed, in which the attacker was injured. We determined that there was another assailant, but he was most likely acting as a watchman.”
The attacker hurled a second package at the station, suspected to be an explosive device. Bomb experts defused the package after the shootout was over.
Çapkın said they were considering the incident as a terrorist attack.
An operation has been launched to apprehend the second attacker.
