A third airport will be built in Istanbul which has already Ataturk Airport in European side and Sabiha Gokcen Airport in Asian side of the city.
Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbas said on Tuesday that a tender would be held in 2012 to build the third airport in the northern part of the city.
Topbas said that the capacity of the airport would be 100 million passengers, noting that if necessary, fifth and sixth runways could be added later, increasing the passenger capacity to 150 million.
He said that Ataturk Airport’s current capacity was 34 million passengers.
The new airport will be constructed near Terkos Lake in the north of Istanbul, added Topbas.
